Annapurna Circuit Trek Trip Overview

Annapurna Circuit Trek is an exciting, diverse, yet challenging trek in Annapurna region. The trek is also the 2nd longest trek in Annapurna Region Trek and we have to cover 128 miles of four districts (Lamjung, Manang, Mustang and Myagdi) and two zones (Gandaki and Dhaulagiri) in 20 days trek; therefore it demands extra physical stamina, courage and prior preparation.

Why is the Annapurna Circuit Trek famous and worth doing?

Dhaulagiri (8,167m/26,795ft) and Annapurna I (8,091m/26,545ft) including some other gleaming peaks: Mt. Trekking Route

The journey begins with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Jagat, from where the trekking trail follows an anti-clockwise route around the Annapurna region. This classic trek encircles the majestic Annapurna Massif along with panoramic views of Dhaulagiri, Manaslu, Langtang, Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), Gangapurna, and Nilgiri.

Trekkers traverse through subtropical forests, terraced farmlands, dense rhododendron hills, thundering waterfalls, glacial valleys, ancient villages, and dramatic cliffs, making the Annapurna Circuit a perfect blend of nature, adventure, and culture.

About Thorong La Pass – The Roof of the Annapurna Circuit

Thorong La Pass is one of the highest Pass in the world and crossing across it is a huge accomplishment for any trekkers. From the pass, we can witness the magisterial beauty of nature, picturesque landscape, scattered villages and dazzling mountains. The pass is risky and needs proper consciousness during morning and afternoon time also in winter and summer seasons.

The trail from Thorang La descends down to another divine destination Muktinath (Mustang) and then windy village Jomsom from where the final trail drops down to Tatopani, Ghorepani to the most beautiful view point: Poon Hill before tracing to Ghandruk and Pokhara.

Annapurna Circuit Trek isn’t all about pristine scenery of snow clad mountains; it also offers the chance to understand the culture, tradition and religious importance of Nepal. On the 2nd day of the trek, there is city excursion to the UNESCO world heritage sites and some historical monuments of Kathmandu valley.

Additional Attractions and Activities on the Annapurna Circuit Trek

Likewise, the trek leads us to Ghandruk; one of the most beautiful and culturally rich Gurung Village of the trek. At Ghandruk, we explore the typical Gurung lifestyle, their culture and tradition; and also visit the Gurung museum. The trek concludes with 6-7 hours of drive from Pokhara to Kathmandu. But we also offer you an option either to travel back to Kathmandu or to spend some electrifying moments in Pokhara: the beautiful tourist hub.

If you have enough spare days, Pokhara is the perfect destination to enjoy the vacation to the fullest.

All in all, Annapurna Circuit Trek is the best trek to explore the entire Annapurna region. The trek is doable in any seasons; so if you want to experience the monsoon trek, Annapurna circuit trek is also the alternative trek.

Day 20 : Final departure

After final checking at hotel, we leave towards Tribhuwan International Airport for departure flight. Final say: While trekking in the higher elevation, low level of oxygen (AMS) can cause problem to some trekkers; in this case, don’t panic and share with guides for immediate health service. Also climate is unpredictable in the Himalayan region so it is always wise decision to add some buffer days in your vacation schedule to avoid any inconvenience. Annapurna circuit trek is long and challenging trek therefore we advise the trekkers to keep well trained before the trek. We have customized the itinerary with proper acclimatization and short hours trek to minimize the risk. If you have any confusion, please consult with our experts. Thank you.

Planning your Annapurna Circuit Trek in Nepal requires reliable travel insurance, emergency rescue coverage, and proper safety preparation. Although this trek is moderate to challenging, crossing high-altitude passes such as Thorong La Pass (5,416m), unpredictable weather, altitude sickness, or accidents can occur. For a safe, worry-free Himalayan journey, comprehensive trekking insurance is strongly recommended.

Travel Insurance for Annapurna Circuit Trek

Before starting your trek from Kathmandu or Pokhara, ensure your travel insurance covers high-altitude trekking up to 6,000 meters. A proper insurance policy should include:

✔️ High-altitude trekking coverage (above 5,000m)
✔️ Emergency helicopter rescue and evacuation
✔️ Medical treatment and hospital expenses
✔️ Trip cancellation and interruption
✔️ Accidental injury and repatriation
✔️ Lost, stolen, or delayed baggage

Without appropriate trekking insurance, emergency helicopter evacuation in the Annapurna region can cost USD 3,000–5,000, depending on location and weather conditions.

Emergency Rescue & Helicopter Evacuation

The Annapurna Circuit Trek covers remote areas, including Thorong La, Manang, and Muktinath, where immediate assistance may be limited. In case of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), injury, or other emergencies, prompt descent or helicopter evacuation is essential.

Rescue Procedure During Emergencies:

1. Inform your trekking guide immediately.

2. The trekking agency coordinates with local rescue services and your insurance provider.

3. Helicopter evacuation is arranged from the nearest safe landing point.

4. Transfer to the nearest hospital in Pokhara or Kathmandu for treatment.

Professional helicopter companies operating in Nepal ensure fast and reliable rescue in the Annapurna region.

Why Insurance Is Mandatory for Annapurna Circuit Trek

The trek includes:

  • Crossing Thorong La Pass (5,416m)

  • Trekking through Manang, Muktinath, and Mustang regions

  • Remote trails with limited medical facilities

  • Unpredictable Himalayan weather and snow conditions

Travel insurance with emergency evacuation coverage ensures safety, peace of mind, and financial protection throughout the trek.

Important Tips for Trekkers

✔️ Carry both digital and printed copies of your insurance policy
✔️ Check altitude limits and trekking activity coverage
✔️ Share insurance details with your trekking agency before departure
✔️ Trek with a licensed and experienced guide for local support and safety
✔️ Stay hydrated, follow proper acclimatization schedules, and monitor your health

Choosing the right insurance, rescue, and evacuation plan for the Annapurna Circuit Trek guarantees a safe, enjoyable, and stress-free Himalayan adventure. With proper coverage, you can fully immerse yourself in the breathtaking landscapes, cultural villages, and panoramic Himalayan views without unnecessary risk.

For a professional, safe, and well-organized trekking experience in Nepal, always travel prepared and insured.

During the Annapurna Circuit Trek, electricity and battery charging facilities are generally available in most villages, but services can be limited and slightly more expensive in remote high-altitude areas. While trekking through the scenic Manang, Thorong Phedi, and Muktinath regions, proper planning for power backup is essential to stay connected and capture your Himalayan adventure.

Electricity Availability

Villages along the Annapurna Circuit, including Besisahar, Chame, Manang, and Muktinath, have electricity mostly supplied via hydroelectric or solar power. However, trekkers should note:

  • Electricity may not be available 24/7 in remote areas

  • Solar power is common at higher elevations

  • Bad weather or maintenance can occasionally disrupt supply

Charging Cost (Per Device)

  • Lower villages (Besisahar, Chame): USD 1–2

  • Manang / Thorong Phedi: USD 2–4

  • Muktinath and high-altitude lodges: USD 3–5

Costs usually apply separately for mobile phones, cameras, power banks, or laptops, depending on availability.

Wi-Fi & Mobile Network

  • Some lodges in Manang and Muktinath offer paid Wi-Fi, but speed can be slow

  • Mobile network coverage is generally available along the route but may be patchy in remote gorges and high passes

Trekking Tips for Power Management

✔️ Carry a high-capacity power bank (10,000–20,000mAh recommended)
✔️ Bring spare batteries for cameras and other devices
✔️ Use airplane mode when not using your phone to save power
✔️ Keep electronics warm in cold conditions to maintain battery life
✔️ Charge devices whenever electricity is available

Planning ahead and carrying backup power ensures that you can fully enjoy panoramic Himalayan views, cultural villages, and high mountain passes while staying connected and capturing memories without unnecessary stress.

While booking your Annapurna Circuit Trek package, it is important to understand the personal expenses that are not included in the standard trekking cost. The trek passes through beautiful villages, high mountain passes, and remote areas, where daily personal spending can vary depending on your comfort level and lifestyle. Proper budgeting ensures a smooth and enjoyable Himalayan adventure.

1. Drinks & Beverages

Hot drinks and bottled beverages are slightly more expensive in high-altitude villages:

  • Tea / Coffee: USD 1–3 per cup

  • Hot Lemon / Ginger Tea: USD 2–4

3. Hot Shower & Personal Services

  • Biscuits / Chips: USD 1–2

  • Toiletries: higher than in Pokhara or Kathmandu

Tip: Buy snacks and personal supplies in Pokhara before starting the trek to save money.

  • Porter: USD 5–8 per day

Tipping depends on service satisfaction and group size.

Estimated Daily Personal Budget

On average, trekkers should budget:

👉 USD 12–25 per day for personal expenses
👉 More if consuming alcohol, using Wi-Fi frequently, or taking hot showers

Important Budget Tips for Annapurna Circuit Trek

✔️ Carry enough Nepali cash (ATMs are limited in high villages)
✔️ Prices increase slightly with altitude
✔️ Avoid unnecessary bottled water purchases
✔️ Plan personal spending in advance

The Annapurna Circuit Trek is one of Nepal’s most iconic and rewarding trekking routes, offering spectacular Himalayan scenery, traditional villages, and the challenging crossing of Thorong La Pass (5,416m). Understanding the trek’s difficulty level and preparing with proper training significantly enhances safety, enjoyment, and success on this diverse high-altitude adventure.

Difficulty Level of Annapurna Circuit Trek

The trek is graded as moderate to strenuous, mainly due to:

  • High altitude: Thorong La Pass reaches 5,416 meters.

  • Long trekking days: 5–8 hours per day depending on terrain.

  • Steep ascents and descents: Especially while crossing Thorong La Pass and descending to Muktinath.

  • Variable trail conditions: Rocky paths, mud, snow, and glacial moraine in higher sections.

  • Cold temperatures and unpredictable weather: Particularly above Manang and on the pass.

The trek passes through Besisahar, Manang, Pisang, Thorong Phedi, Muktinath, and several other traditional villages, combining cultural immersion with breathtaking mountain landscapes.

Main Challenges

1. High Altitude & AMS Risk
Altitude sickness (AMS) is the biggest challenge. Proper acclimatization days in Manang and Thorong Phedi are essential.

2. Thorong La Pass Crossing
The pass involves a steep, long climb in cold, often windy conditions, requiring stamina and careful pacing.

3. Weather Conditions
Strong winds, sudden snowfall, and rapidly changing weather are common in the high Himalayas.

Training Tips for Annapurna Circuit Trek

Proper preparation 6–8 weeks before your trek is highly recommended.

Cardiovascular Training

  • Brisk walking (5–10 km regularly)

  • Hiking with a weighted backpack

  • Stair climbing or step-ups

  • Running, cycling, or swimming

Strength Training

  • Squats, lunges, and step-ups

  • Core exercises for balance and stability

  • Leg and back strengthening workouts

Practice Hiking

  • Do short hikes carrying a 5–8 kg backpack to simulate trekking conditions

  • Gradually increase endurance on hilly terrain

Mental Preparation

High-altitude trekking requires patience, slow pacing, and strong mental endurance. Familiarity with long trekking days and isolation helps prepare for the journey.

Who Can Do This Trek?

The Annapurna Circuit Trek is suitable for:
✔️ Physically fit beginners with proper preparation
✔️ Experienced trekkers seeking a challenging adventure
✔️ Adventure enthusiasts looking for cultural and scenic diversity

Previous high-altitude trekking experience is helpful but not mandatory.

Annapurna trek - May 2022

Mountain Mart is gewoon TOP!!!

Annapurna circuit trek 20 day
After recently completing the Annapurna circuit trek with Mountain Mart Treks I couldn’t be happier with the level of service they provided. From day one they were very quick to respond to all questions and able to suit all my needs without any hesitation. Special mention to our guide Raju who continually went above and beyond his role to provide us the best of everything that was on offer and his knowledge about the the Annapurna circuit was incredible. Also our porter Ram who would continually do his best to make sure we were as comfortable as could be, during and even after his porter duties were finished for the day. Any one thinking of visiting Nepal for either trekking or sightseeing I highly recommend Mountain Mart Treks, you will not be disappointe

Annapurna Circuit
Thank you for organising such a fantastic trip at such short notice.
Nabin and Durga looked after my sister and I really well. I was unfortunately unwell for a few days but they altered the pace so that i could complete the full circuit.

We chose to do this adventure at the end of Sept which meant we got glimpses of the scenery during the day and amazing views at sunset. However, it meant the circuit was not as busy and we often walked for hours without seeing anyone else.

I would definitely recommend Mountain Mart as a very professional and friendly company.

Thanks again - Bethany

Annapurna circuit and Tilicho lake trekking trip
Let’s start with that we had an absolute blast of a time in the Himalayas with our guide Bhoj! We did the Annapurna circuit and added little de-tour to the Tilicho lake. At first we wanted to go on our own, however with our guide we learned a lot about the culture and could connect with the local ways. Also we would have missed quite some little details if we would have gone without our guide. Bhoj was very helpful, funny and great to have around. If we return to the Himalayas we would definitely contact our new friend at mountain Mart to arrange a new adventure!

The Annapurna Circuit Trek is the most scenic journey which gives us an opportunity to witness the two Eight-Thouanders Mt. Dhaulagiri (8,167m/26,795ft) and Annapurna I (8,091m/26,545ft) including some other gleaming peaks: Mt. Manaslu (8,163m/26,781ft), Annapurna III (7,555m/24787ft), Gangapuram (7,455m/24,459ft), Annapurna South (7,219m/23,684ft), Machhapuchhre (6,997m/22,956ft) and Lamjung Himal (6,931m/22,740ft).

The Annapurna Circuit Trek is renowned not only for its breathtaking Himalayan scenery but also for its diverse climate, rich cultural heritage, religious harmony, traditional lifestyles, and lush vegetation teeming with unique wildlife species.

Annapurna Circuit Trek - Trip Highlights

  • Thorong La Pass (5,416m / 17,769ft) – the highest point on the trek
  • Kali Gandaki Gorge – the world’s deepest gorge
  • Tilicho Lake (4,919m / 16,138ft) – one of the highest lakes in the world
  • The sacred Muktinath Temple – a holy pilgrimage site for both Hindus and Buddhists
  • The 108 holy water spouts at Muktinath
  • Natural hot springs at Chame and Tatopani
  • The iconic sunrise view from Poon Hill

3. Hot Shower & Personal Services

  • Biscuits / Chips: USD 1–2

  • Toiletries: higher than in Pokhara or Kathmandu

Tip: Buy snacks and personal supplies in Pokhara before starting the trek to save money.

Tipping depends on service satisfaction and group size.

Estimated Daily Personal Budget

On average, trekkers should budget:

👉 USD 12–25 per day for personal expenses
👉 More if consuming alcohol, using Wi-Fi frequently, or taking hot showers
